Atlas Poetica 11 continues its tradition of focussing upon a topic of particular interest in the field of tanka, kyoka, and gogyoshi poetry in English. This issue emphasizes responsive tanka--sequences written by two or more authors in a 'call and response' fashion. Includes a nonfiction article, several examples of responsive tanka, and a review of a collection of responsive tanka. As always, it publishes individual tanka, kyoka, and gogyoshi, tanka prose and sequences, book reviews, announcements, and other items of interest.

Atlas Poetica A Journal of Poetry of Place in Contemporary Tanka Volume 11 M Kei 9780615593982 Books

Atlas Poetica: A Journal of Place in Contemporary Tanka, Spring 2012 Number 11, has been published by poet and novelist M. Kei, Editor. The poetry in this edition of the journal presents the work of poets from many countries. From the basic five line tanka format, Mr. Kei shows the reader the power of the short poems to explore contemporary themes. In the section, Tanka in Sets and Sequences, sets consist of multiple poems related to general themes such as Community Service by Genie Nakano. The sequences are poems connected by prose descriptions relating personal stories and observations, such as, Into His Skin by Rodney Williams. Poems written as separate entities are presented in the Individual Tanka section covering many topics. The common thread in all of the work in the Journal is the anchoring of poetry to places in the world.

Reviews of poetry are included in the 11th Volume of Atlas Poetica. They illustrate the trends and impact of tanka poetry published in other sources. Two articles are included in the Journal that encourage people to write their own tanka (Entering the Wonderland, Writing Tanka by Mira N. Mataric) and to stimulate poets to collaborate with other writers (Responsive Tanka Trios & Quartets: A New Twist on Collaborative Composition by Dr. Carmella Braniger). Mr. Kei summarizes the content of these articles by writing in his editorial, "By using vernacular language and everyday subjects, tanka can communicate more directly than the loftier expressions beloved by academics and formalists. What is more natural than that tanka poets should include tanka as part of their ordinary mode of communication?"

The reader who enjoys poetry will be interested in Mr. Kei's work to expand a uniquely international approach to the ancient Japanese tanka form in his Journal. This broadening of emphasis is described in more detail in an earlier edition of Atlas Poetica: A Journal of Poetry of Place in Contemporary Tanka Volume 10.

Atlas Poetica A Journal of Poetry of Place in Contemporary Tanka Volume 11 M Kei 9780615593982 Books Reviews

Atlas Poetica is one the the best tanka journals out there. This volume 11 is outstanding!! The writers are from around the world making the journal vibrant and filled with cultural diversity. I so enjoy that Atlas Poetica includes tanka/prose, tanka in sets, sequences, reviews and articles. I particularly liked the multiple heartfelt yet humourous tanka by Genie Nakano--"Community Service". The editor includes short bios honoring each poet. Even the cover image is unique--the Mayn River, Siberia as seen from Our Earth As Art by NASA. --Wow.
